Even though Vail and Leadville are only about 35 mile apart, they are opposite places financially. Vail was wilderness area up until they started development in the 1960’s. Vail is still in the middle of wilderness, with the only difference being that the town of Vail has been developed with million dollar homes, ski resort villages, fancy shopping and restaurants, and vail has summer activities like rafting, golf courses, and fly fishing. Leadville used to be a busy gold mining town which is now home to Colorado Mountain College, and some shops in a restored downtown area. Leadville has some RV parks and camping options near Vail mostly in national forest campgrounds. These campgrounds run the range from easy to get into and out of for quick highway stopovers to more remote, secluded and primitive off-road camping options.
